Assignment 25A - What's Next?

Existing Market

The next step for my business is to design how the app would work in a diagram. This would mean describing the function of the app, such as what happens if you click on what, etc.

Interview 1 (my roommate): He said I should include ways to incorporate people's social media in the app to make it easy for them to share.

Interview 2 (a friend): She suggested that I include workout videos as a part of the app, making the app more than just a simple way to see how crowded the gym is. She thinks it could expand to something more.

Interview 3 (another friend): He suggested that I table in Turlington or outside the gym. This would give me the opportunity to promote my app to people that would benefit from it.

After conducting these interviews, I think there could definitely be room for my to expand my app to more than just a gym counter. I should give customers as many reasons to want to use my app as I can. I also think that when the app is ready, tabling around campus could be a cheap and easy way to promote it. I've actually downloaded an app someone was promoting in Turlington, so I know it can work. My next big step, however, would be to plan out the app in depth with flow charts and diagrams to visually express how it would work.

New Market

The new market I am choosing to target would be elderly people.

Interview 1 (my grandpa): He doesn't really go to the gym that often, but he said he thinks the idea to send notifications to people is good and I should think of more ways to improve that. He said a lot of people just don't think about it, and getting a notification can be a helpful reminder to go.

Interview 2 (my neighbor): She doesn't own a gym membership either, but she liked my idea. She said she's not really big into technology so it would have to be very simple for her to want to use it if she did go to the gym.

After conducting these interviews, I have learned more about different markets. I will likely not target the elderly population simply because most of them do not go to the gym, but for the few that do, I have to remember that I should make the app simple enough for them to use it as well. Sometimes too much information or too many features popping up can discourage people from using the app. I can still incorporate cool features, but I just have to ensure the way the app works is simple and easy to understand.

  1. Hi Jacob!
Great job on your post. You are doing a great job remembering that your primary market is not your only market. Elderly people who would like to use the gym to stretch and use the sauna do not necessarily want to do so beside huge body builders and runners. To use a simple app and see the times that would fit with their schedule or liking is super beneficial. I hope to hear about how it turns out.

  2. Hey Jacob,

Well done on your What's Next assignment this week. I am very intrigued by your idea of targeting the older market for your gym app. As I have followed your product, this has never been an idea that came to my mind and as you were to soon find out, was not the best market to target. Even though it ended up not working, you did a great job thinking outside the box and finding a market that is definitely different.

  3. Hi Jacob,
I think it is a great idea to design the app using a diagram and writing it out. It costs money every hour to design an app, so you should do as much as you can in the design page before you begin to spend money. I liked your friend’s idea to expand the app outside of just seeing how crowded the gym is.
