Assignment 27A - Reading Reflection No. 3

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?

  • The book mentions how social media pages now are almost considered a second resume. Employers can find a surplus of information about who you are as a person and your interests based off of what you post, follow, like, etc. It also talks about how nobody knows exactly the best way to use social media and how it works because it is always changing. Trends come and go, new features are introduced, and the target audience can sometimes shift. The book isn't necessarily intended for top social media personalities that are excelling in the subject, but rather the average Joe who doesn't know a lot about ways to utilize social media to its full advantage. The book answers many basic questions you may or may not have thought of.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

  • I think social media is an important part of entrepreneurship. Having previously owned a small business centered around social media, I've become quite familiar with how it works and ways to monetize it or gather traffic. The beauty of social media, however, is that you can never learn too much. There are always new practices being introduced and different, creative ways to be on the top. This book reminded me of that and encouraged me to keep up with my social media knowledge.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
  • I would design an exercise to revamp everyone's social media pages to sift through unprofessional posts that future employers may find. This would be very beneficial to some, as there have been cases of employers choosing not to hire someone based off of their social media profiles.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
  • One thing that I never really thought of diving into is cross platform promotion. I usually focused on one social media platform at a time, but it's more beneficial to share your traffic across all of your social media platforms. If you have a big following on Instagram, you should start a Twitter and promote it on your Instagram. You never know what may happen to your Instagram account, it could get hacked or deleted. It's best to have a backup on a different platform so you don't lose everything.
