Assignment 19A - Idea Napkin No. 2

Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?

My name is Jacob, and I am a third year information systems major. I am a great communicator, team player, and problem solver. When I was in high school, I created a social media business that generated me thousands of dollars. I am experienced with WordPress with web development. I have also taken several object oriented programming classes, giving me a foundation of programming knowledge and an interest in app development. When I am on a normal schedule, I go to the gym regularly and have a fair sense of how a workout routine typically goes. If I were to create the app, I could easily see myself being obsessed with it and devoting most of my time to its improvement. I tend to dive deep into projects I am very passionate about.

What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).

The current unmet need of my customers is the need for an efficient workout schedule. My app would take data from local gyms about how many people are currently in the gym, and recommend the best time for someone to go based off of current capacity. In future updates, the app could potentially offer custom workout routines and recommend certain diets based off of user input.

Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?

This app broadly targets anyone who has a flexible schedule and goes to the gym, but it more specifically targets college students at crowded gyms. These students would be looking for motivation to be healthier and make their workouts more efficient. The common characteristic in my customers is the interest in a healthier lifestyle.

Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.

The app would likely be free to the user but be supported monetarily by ads. Businesses would want to pay me because I could provide them a targeted market of consumers that they can cater to. However, later on I would implement workout plans and diets through affiliate marketing.

What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?

There isn't currently an app that works the way I am describing it. UF students in particular often do not know exactly how crowded the gym besides an educated guess. This app would give them precise information to see how crowded it is.

Feedback Memo:

One person pointed out to me that Google can provide you estimated traffic for how busy places can be. I have taken this feedback into consideration and increased the capability of my app to not only show how busy the gym will be, but recommend the best time to go based off of user input. Another person I talked to suggested that I add workout routines and diets using affiliate marketing. This way, I can sell an already selling product and receive a portion of the profits for promoting it.

  1. Hey Jacob,

I have been following your product the whole semester and needless to say, I really do believe it's not only a great idea but a good business model as well. In the value to the customer portion it really shows. The fact that the app would be free would allow for almost every gym user to want to use it, and then the ads would be a great way to get the revenue needed to survive.

  2. Hi Jacob,
Again, its cool to see another information systems major that is developing a new product and company. Hopefully the skills that you learn in the Information Systems program will be beneficial to you while being an entrepreneur. I think that your app idea is great and beneficial, and it solves a big problem. It is also nice that there is no competition in your market.

  3. Hey Jacob,

I think you did a really good job on this assignment as far as taking the feedback you were given and implementing it into the planning and design of your app. I agree that the use of affiliate marketing could be helpful when adding workout routines and diets and would allow you to earn more profit.
