Assignment 7A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Gym Capacity App

  • Opportunity:
    • Picking the right time to go to the gym is a big part of having an efficient workout. An app that would allow you to track how crowded the gym is would be useful.
      • The who: People who go to the gym
      • The what: An app that tracks a gym's capacity
      • The why: To plan an efficient workout
  • Testing the who:
    • This could also be useful for people who don't go to the gym but want to start going. Some people are self conscious of other people watching them and would want to go at the least crowded time that fits their schedule.
  • Testing the what:
    • The app would rely on the gym having a tracking system for capacity already and would just project that number to the app.
  • Testing the why:
    • People have busy schedules and want to get the most out of their time. If someone only has one hour to workout, they would want to be productive during that hour instead of sitting around waiting for a machine to open up.
  • Interview #1:
    • My roommate who goes to the gym said that while this app could be useful on some days, most of the time he doesn't have much of a choice as to when he goes to the gym, it is the same time every day due to his busy schedule.
  • Interview #2:
    • I asked a girl at the gym if this is something that she would be interested. She said she would definitely use this app because the leg press machine is usually taken during busier times of the day and it can take a while to get it.
  • Interview #3:
    • I talked to my friend that doesn't go to the gym that often about the app. He liked the idea, but said he personally wouldn't use it that much because he claims he's too busy to go to the gym. I asked him if he would consider going if he knew there wasn't a lot of people in the gym to save time but he said that's still an hour or so out of his day that he needs for other things.
  • Interview #4:
    • I asked my Dad who goes to the gym on occasion if he would use an app like this. He said the gym he goes to isn't often packed and waiting on machines is never really an issue. To him, it doesn't really matter how many people are in the gym, that's not a factor when determining when he is going to go. However, he did say that if it were crowded and that was an issue, he would definitely use the app.
  • Interview #5:
    • For the last interview, I talked to my sister, who is a freshman and goes to the gym almost every day. She said that it would be helpful to know the times that the gym is crowded and it would impact her decision as to when to go. Most of her classes are online so she has to plan out her day as to when to get things done.
  • Given these interviews, I learned a few things about this opportunity that I had not considered before. Some people already have a routine of going to the gym at the same time every day, so they don't have much of a choice as to when they go so this wouldn't be as useful. However, to the people that do get to choose when they go, this seems like it would be helpful. After talking to my Dad, I realized that this would also be more beneficial in bigger cities instead of small towns like where he lives. College towns would be the most ideal for the app, followed by big cities.

  1. Hey Jacob,

I absolutely love your thought process here. This is a clear opportunity and I believe that most people who have been to the gym at UF can agree. I was actually a part of the reason why the gym added a live camera on their website to help show how busy it was. An app would make this process a lot easier and I think you are really onto something with this idea.

  2. Hi Jacob
First off, I think this idea is the best one I have heard of yet. I think it is an amazing idea and I would definitely use it every time I went to the gym. I agree that college towns are the best market because students don’t have as rigid as a schedule as people who have 9-5 jobs.
